Welcome to the first issue of the Image City Photography Gallery monthly newsletter. Each month you'll find the latest news from the Gallery as well as regular features related to the world of photography:
Picks of the Month features images of our current show selected by a recognized photographer, with his brief commentary. We are pleased to share the selections by Peter Marr from the Elsewhere show.
In the Tip of the Month Gary Thompson, President of ICPG, shares his special tips to help all of us take better pictures
My Image... One of the Gallery Partners or Artists-in-Residence will feature one of his/her own images with a short photo-essay. The only rule is that the text has to start with the words "My Image ........"

| Elsewhere Show Success |

Runs Through January 27
"Elsewhere", the first juried theme show organized by Image City Photography Gallery, has received an astonishingly warm response. Close to 500 very high quality images were submitted; 167 images from 113 different photographers were selected and currently on exhibit at the Gallery. We were very pleased at the wonderful response from the many visitors during our opening weekend. It has been very refreshing to see the life and creativity of the photographic community given one word "Elsewhere" and 500 different photographic interpretations.
One of our goals was to give a first opportunity for numerous photography enthusiasts to show their work. After all, for all of us, as for musicians, the ultimate target is to put our work in front of the public. Being selected and preparing their work for the show has been a good learning experience for many of the guest photographers.
As you see from the pictures taken during the opening reception by Steven Tryon and Sheridan Vincent, this show is an opportunity for the members of the local photography community, patrons, and guest photographers to exchange views about the images and techniques.
All in all, this first juried theme show is a success, and it is our pleasure to confirm that we'll organize a second show for January 2009. The new theme will be announced at the beginning of September 2008.

 Peter Marr Picks Five Favorites from the Elsewhere Show
Peter Marr is an enthusiastic and highly skilled photographer recognized by numerous awards in Kodak and international salons. He is also an expert judge in both local and international photographic competitions and has kindly agreed to inaugurate this month's Peter's Picks. Peter has selected five images from the current show, "Elsewhere". In addition to seeing the photos he selected you can also read about what attracted him to make the selection.

 Utilize the Keep It Simple System
This is sometimes referred to as the KISS concept. After you finish taking a photograph, but before you move your camera, ask yourself what first attracted you to shoot this image. Then move in physically or zoom in tight on that component of the image that first attracted you. Chances are that the resulting image which isolates the attraction will be more powerful and communicative than the original image that contained more information. Most photographers try to include too much information. Remember in photography more is generally less.

My image is, in fact, a test that I did when I received a new pinhole camera last year. The objective was to test the camera when taking pictures in low light. But during the long 45-minute exposure, it appeared to me that I was shooting a picture that illustrates what I call the "TV Civilization", the ascendancy of television in today's life: the TV set is on in an empty room, the doors giving access to the outdoors are closed, the image on the screen is blurred (we see so many images each day and we memorize so few).
I scanned the image and treated it in Photoshop to get the flavor of the pictures of the 50's when the TV started to take its space in our life.

| A Photographer's Path 11 - Exhibit at High Falls Art Gallery
High Falls Art Gallery at the Center at High Falls Visitor Center, 60 Browns Race, Rochester has long supported local artists. Staff and gallery volunteers produce a very fine venue for artists to exhibit and patrons to appreciate local artists.
"A Photographer's Path 11" continues the annual tradition for photographers. High Falls Art Gallery and Community Darkroom GCAE calls for submissions to the juried exhibit for all local photographic artists. All photographic techniques are welcome. White or off-white mats only, black professional grade metal frames only. Minimum image size 11 x 14-in. Exceptions made only when integral to the presentation. You may submit 1 to 3 pieces. Entry fee $15 per artist. Late fees apply after February 17.
Drop-off week to submit photographs for jurying is February 13 to February 17. The exhibit opening reception for selected works is March 16, 2008 3 - 6 PM and the exhibit runs to April 27.
In the meantime High Falls Art Gallery opens a new show this Sunday, January 20 with a reception from 3-6 PM. The show is "Land, Sea and Sky". Check it out. |
