Duel on the Starboard Tack

A
n offshore breeze in Nantucket Bay propels the two sloops on a beam reach.  They are only yards apart as they vie for position with the upcoming windward mark.  The boat to loo’ard has the right of way, but the windward boat will gradually gain a position advantage.  Can it capture that advantage before the mark?  On the other hand, will the windward boat let the opponent round first, and perhaps gain an upwind advantage for the next mark?  Will the lee boat sail up to force the windward to give clearance?
The drama is set. The race is on.
