Flutter by
Elisa Knataitis, $185, You couldn’t help yourself, could
you? You saw this
photograph from across the Gallery and were drawn to it immediately.
It’s dramatic! There’s a red frame, a red sub-frame that’s not
centered and a black mat. This is not your expected presentation.
Additionally, there’s a beautiful face with the left eye hidden by
her hair and the right eye looking right at you with a feathery
accoutrement… and those lips! How could you resist?
This kind of portraiture is considered transcendental.
Great portraiture is about more than the right lens and the
right lighting. It’s about having a vision and connecting with your
subject to make images that transcend the simple headshot.
There are those photographers that are content to show you
what they captured as it was before them.
Elisa admits that she uses Lightroom and Photoshop to augment
her work with overlays, textures, and new techniques to create fine
art images. Elisa has also excluded all the other features you might
expect in a traditional portrait.
This is just the face, and you can’t escape it.
It’s a stunning accomplishment that makes me say… more please Elisa!

Sodus Winter Wave
by David Mezzoprete,
$150, David’s Sodus Winter Wave is alive with
drama. I can hear the crashing sound of the wave exploding into the
air in a thousand pieces, the rushing of the foamy waters over the
stones and ice. In my mind’s eye and memory, I am there. The wind,
the turbulent lake and dark skies tell of the cold. And there,
beyond, is a sailor’s guardian – the light house on the Lake Ontario
shore. It stands, seemingly unperturbed by it all.David’s
wonderful photograph tells this story of water, wind and the
guardian in black, white and a full range of grays. The wave’s white
spray and the ice-covered rocks dominate the image and stand out
against the dark sky and the lake’s waters beyond. I find myself
exploring the ice and water that seems to be flowing toward my feet.
The second smaller wave to the right with its white edge brings my
eye to the light house beyond, white against the dark sky. The cloud
above stretches back to the wave, and the circle continues, stopping
at interesting spots along the way. Then the story emerges as a
whole, balanced. I’m there.
Thank you, David, for this so-well-told story! By John Solberg
